Myanmar President Thein Sein has cancelled a planned trip to Thailand in the wake of Aung San Su Kyi’s wildly enthusiastic reception at the World Economic Forum, including multiple tours of Myanmar refugee communities.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha said the cancellation might have stemmed from “dissatisfaction” over the contrast in Suu Kyi’s trip and his own scheduled two-day visit.
The contrast in media attention would have been significant, said observers. Suu Kyi’s non-stop press coverage stemmed from the world’s fascination with her and her first trip abroad in 24 years.
Thein Sein, who has cooperated with Suu Kyi in moving Myanmar toward a democratic path, was going to be granted an audience by His Majesty the King and was also scheduled to sign an MoU with the Thai government involving human resources and connectivity issues.
